Stay in The Know

Moving in the winter may seem less than enjoyable- but did you know most winter moves are cheaper than those that happen in warmer months! It’s true! Due to less demand on moving companies for multiple reasons (i.e. kids being in school, busy holiday schedules, etc.) most moving companies offer a lesser rate during chilly months! Be sure to discuss winter moving discounts with your moving company to assure you’re saving as much as you can – or let your moving concierge handle it so you don’t have to.

Handle Items with Care

Plastic moving totes can be a great option for a winter move v. traditional cardboard moving boxes. Plastic totes are weather proof, and are able to endure far more. Keep in mind that fragile items are more susceptible to cracking during extreme temperatures, so it is important to wrap or insulate them to keep them safe. If your moving company is packing your goods be sure to note for them special items (i.e china, family heirlooms, etc.) for proper wrapping. If you are packing up yourself be sure to purchase proper wrapping materials at your local home store.

Prepare Your Home

With all of the hustle and bustle of  moving don’t forget to prep your home. Be sure your driveway/sidewalk area is clear of any snow for ease of loading for your movers, and don’t forget to salt any ice to rid of slippery patches!  This will prevent your. movers from being injured, or any of your valuable items being broken! Always keep a first aid kit on hand in case of an accident.

We also recommend adding protective covering or tarps near the entryway to ensure your floors don’t get slippery, or dirty. The last thing you want to worry about when leaving your old home is having to clean the floors! You may also want to consider offering foot coverings to your moving team to slide over their shoes for when they’re inside. Go ahead and turn the heat off in your home- since the door will be open for the majority of the day you don’t want to waste money on unnecessary utilities- and don’t forget to layer up as your home will likely be chilly!  Also ensure your pets have a safe place to stay so they don’t run out mid-move (i.e a relatives home, a crate, etc.)

Weather Watch

Keep an eye on the weather starting the week of your move (no need to stress any earlier- as we know the weather can change quickly!).  You can easily check an hourly forecast via your zip code quickly and easily here. Be sure to stay in close communication with your moving company in case any changes need to be arranged due to weather conditions. Stay mindful of road conditions if you are driving to your new destination! Don’t forget to keep heavy coats, gloves, hats, etc. on hand in case of a shift in weather- we recommend keeping in the car or an easy access overnight bag (especially for little ones!).
